Basic models of the airplane three view outlines are used to create a dimensionally correct solids computer model which are used for physically locating the airplanes in hangars.
Advanced models will have the surfaces smoothed to create realistic models that are used for presentations.
All models are dimensionally accurate so that clearances between wingtips or horizontal stabilizers can be ensured, as well as the landing gear configurations so that accurate ground handling can be examined. This can be used to mark the landing gear path on the hangar floor.
